How to Connect GA4 to Looker Studio (Step-by-Step)
By Emily Redmond, Data Analyst at Emilytics · April 2026
TL;DR: Connect GA4 to Looker Studio in 5 minutes: go to Looker Studio, create a data source, select Google Analytics 4, choose your property, and confirm. Then build your first report. No coding required.
Before You Start: Check Your Permissions
You need two things:
- GA4 access: You must be an Editor on the GA4 property (not Viewer or Analyst)
- Google account: You need a Google account with Gmail (Looker Studio requires this)
If you don't have Editor access, ask your GA4 admin to grant it. You'll need your email address.
Step 1: Open Looker Studio
- Go to looker.google.com in your browser
- Sign in with your Google account
- If this is your first time, you may see a welcome screen. Click "Get Started" or "Create"
You're now in Looker Studio.
Step 2: Create a Data Source
- Click "Create" (top left)
- Select "Data Source"
You're now in the data source creation interface.
Step 3: Connect Google Analytics 4
- Search for "Google Analytics 4" in the connector list
- Click on it
- You'll be prompted to authorize Looker Studio to access your GA4 property
Click "Authorize" and log in with the Google account that has GA4 access.
Step 4: Select Your GA4 Property
After authorization, you'll see a list of your GA4 properties:
- Find the property you want to connect (look for the property name or ID)
- Select it by clicking on it
- Click "Create" or "Connect"
Looker Studio will now verify the connection.
Step 5: Name Your Data Source
- You'll see a form asking for the data source name
- Give it a clear name: "GA4 - [Your Site Name]"
- This helps you organize multiple data sources
- Click "Create"
Congratulations! Your GA4 connection is active.
Step 6: Build Your First Report
Now that your data source is connected, let's create your first report:
- Click "Create" > "Report"
- Choose the GA4 data source you just created
- Looker Studio will open a blank report canvas
You're now ready to add charts.
Add Your First Chart
- Click "Insert Chart" (top menu)
- Choose "Scorecard" (the simplest chart type)
- In the chart setup panel on the right:
- Metric: "Sessions"
- Date Range: "Last 30 days"
- Click somewhere else to save the chart
You should see a big number showing your sessions for the last 30 days.
Step 7 (Optional): Add a Second Chart
To see organic traffic only:
- Click "Insert Chart" > "Time Series"
- Metric: "Sessions"
- Dimension: "Date"
- Date Range: "Last 90 days"
- Add a filter: "Session Default Channel Group" = "Organic Search"
- Click "Insert"
You now have a chart showing organic traffic over 90 days.
Troubleshooting Common Errors
Error: "You don't have permission to access this property"
Solution: You need GA4 Editor access. Ask your GA4 admin to grant it. Viewer or Analyst access won't work with Looker Studio.
Error: "No data available"
Solution: Wait 24–48 hours. If GA4 is brand new, it takes time to collect data. Also check the date range—if you set it to "Last 30 days" but GA4 only has 5 days of data, nothing will show.
Error: "Property not found"
Solution: Make sure you're selecting the GA4 property, not the Universal Analytics property. GA4 properties have "GA4" in the name or are labeled "GA-XXXXXXXXX" not "UA-XXXXXXXXX."
Data looks wrong or is missing
Solution: Check your filters. If you filtered to "Organic Search" only but most of your traffic is Direct, you'll see very little data. Remove the filter and try again.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Do I need a Google Analytics 4 property or will Universal Analytics work?
A: GA4 only. Universal Analytics (UA) is deprecated and not supported in Looker Studio anymore. If you're still on UA, now's the time to migrate to GA4.
Q: Can multiple people edit the same Looker Studio report?
A: Yes. Looker Studio supports collaborative editing just like Google Docs. Click "Share" and grant edit access to team members.
Q: How often does Looker Studio update data?
A: Usually within 24 hours. GA4 itself has up to 48-hour latency, and Looker Studio adds a small delay on top of that. For real-time dashboards, use the native GA4 dashboard instead.
Q: Can I export my Looker Studio report?
A: Yes. Click the three-dot menu and select "Download as PDF." You can also schedule automatic PDF emails.
Q: What's the difference between Looker Studio and GA4's native dashboards?
A: GA4 dashboards are built-in and real-time. Looker Studio is more flexible—you can customize charts, combine data sources, and automate emails. Use GA4 for quick status checks, Looker Studio for formal reports.
The Bottom Line
Connecting GA4 to Looker Studio takes five minutes and opens up unlimited reporting possibilities. Once connected, you can build dashboards, schedule reports, and share insights without touching a spreadsheet.
The connection is one-way: Looker Studio reads from GA4. Changes in Looker Studio don't affect GA4.
